last summer
I went on a guided garden hike in Sun Valley
we stopped to look at a yucca plant
it looked finished
dead
kaput
but the guide told us
it wasn’t over for the yucca plant
you see, a yucca doesn’t end with its bloom
when the rosette fades
and the stem gives way,
the plant remains,
anchored and steady
from a side shoot or hidden bud
new life pushes through
carrying on quietly
as if no big whoop
with each loss
the yucca finds renewal
It grows outward,
steady and unhurried,
resilient, it endures,
shedding what is done
and thriving in what remains,
a quiet testament
that no matter how bad it seems
there is still life to be lived
